James Hardie Siding vs Brick
James Hardie Siding vs Brick
When we talk about brick in Canada, we talk about a very different thing as far as longevity goes. If this was another country, like the UK, for example, their brickwork lasts much longer. The reasons are twofold: One, the colleges in the UK provide a two-year certification program to become a mason, so the quality of their work is usually better. Two and more importantly is their weather. Most of the UK is green all year round. Though they have frost, there is very little of it, so there is no freezing and thawing.
Now let’s take Canada; anyone can set up shop and call themselves a masonry company. I am not saying that all companies aren’t adequately trained or don’t have a certificate. Still, it is not necessary to start a Masonry company or become a bricklayer. There are some great Masonry companies in Canada.
Most Canadian winters are harsh on the average brickwork on your home. With the freezing and thawing, your brickwork has to be maintained with tuckpointing, brick replacement etc.
As seen in the picture above, two old homes, both over 50 years old, the left is a brick home, and the right is siding. The brick home shows most of the lower part of the home’s brickwork needed to be replaced, and the upper brickwork need work. On the old siding home, the roof is in rough shape, but at the moment, the siding is still pretty good; though there are a few dents, it is still in working condition on that part of the house.
