What is Lap Siding?

Lap siding, often known as “clapboard siding,” is a popular type of siding used in building exteriors, especially in residential construction. It is characterized by long, horizontal planks of wood, vinyl, fiber cement, or other materials, designed to overlap each other slightly. This overlapping is what gives it the name “lap siding.” The design ensures that water runs off the siding, reducing the risk of water infiltration into the building.

The key features of lap siding include:

  1. Horizontal Planks: The planks are installed horizontally across the exterior of a building.

  2. Overlapping Joints: Each plank overlaps the one below it to create a tight seal, protecting the building from elements like rain and snow.

  3. Variety of Materials: Traditional lap siding is made from wood, but modern options include vinyl, fiber cement, and composite materials, offering different aesthetics and maintenance requirements.

  4. Aesthetic Appeal: It gives a classic, timeless look to homes and can be painted or finished in various colors and textures.

  5. Durability: Depending on the material, lap siding can be very durable and withstand various weather conditions.

Lap siding is chosen for its combination of protective function and aesthetic appeal, and it can be found in a range of architectural styles, from traditional to contemporary.

Unleash the Potential of Lap Siding for Your Home

Lap siding, known for its durability and almost unlimited colour choice, is an excellent choice for any home. Its overlapping design offers superior protection against harsh weather conditions while giving your house a classic and elegant appearance.

  1. Ship Lap: Shiplap is a type of wooden board used commonly as exterior siding to construct residences, barns, sheds, and outbuildings. It is either rough-sawn 1″ or milled 3/4″ pine or similarly inexpensive wood between 3″ and 10″ wide with a 3/8″ – 1/2″ rabbet on opposite sides of each edge.

  2. Channel Lap (also known as Channel Rustic): This type of siding has a 1/2″–3/4″ rebate or notch cut into the underside of the board. When installed, the gap fits over the board’s top edge beneath it, creating a channel effect. This gives the appearance of depth and shadow lines on the wall and provides excellent weather protection.

  3. Dutch Lap (German Lap): Dutch Lap siding is called Cove Lap and German Lap siding. It has a similar general pattern outline as channel rustic lap siding but with a curved “reveal” that displays between the installed boards. The reveal has a concave curve, creating a shadow line effect that accentuates the individual planks. Dutch Lap siding is often used to create a traditional or rustic look.

  4. Nickel Gap: Nickel Gap siding (also known as Shadow Gap, Gap Panel, and Channel Groove) looks similar to tongue-and-groove panelling but with a distinct “gap” between the boards. The gap is usually the thickness of a nickel (about 2mm), hence the name. The opening creates a shadow line, giving the wall a modern look. This type of siding can be installed horizontally or vertically.

Each of these patterns can create a distinct look for your home, and the best choice depends on your personal preferences, the architectural style of your home, and the local climate.
